4 March 2015
MUNICH. By mid-April 2015 Telefónica Deutschland will make the UMTS
networks of O2 and E-Plus available to all customers of the Company. With
this milestone for the network integration, the company bundles both
networks' strengths for the first time. Telefónica Deutschland offers own
and partner brands' customers in cities the highest density and in rural
areas a significantly expanded UMTS network infrastructure. Therefore, the
user experience of mobile data services improves even where customers are
not supplied with LTE yet, without additional costs. The technical
foundation for this is called "national roaming". The company will
introduce this connection to each other's UMTS network nationwide to all
customers in O2 and E-Plus networks within a few weeks.
"The introduction of national roaming is the starting signal for Telefónica
Deutschland's new network. Hence, also in terms of network our customers
and partners will experience the first tangible benefits of the merger.
With the joined network coverage, we will provide them with the best
network experience via UMTS in Germany and are pleased, that we are able to
realize this technological large-scale project for our customers ahead of
schedule," said Thorsten Dirks, CEO of Telefónica Deutschland.
In cities, customers can expect a denser network coverage especially in
buildings. In rural areas, especially those customers will benefit, whose
previous network did not provide UMTS coverage. They can automatically use
the other UMTS network, if available. UMTS networks continue to be
Germany's "workhorses" of mobile infrastructure, transporting the largest
data volumes. A registration of the customer device for national roaming is
not required.
The national roaming will also support positive customer experience during
the further integration of the two network infrastructures. Telefónica
Deutschland intends to complete this consolidation within the next five
years.
At the same time, the Telefónica Deutschland is making good progress
driving the accelerated expansion of its LTE network. In the fourth quarter
of 2014, the company considerably increased its investment in comparison to
the previous quarters. Currently, network coverage in the LTE network is
approximately 62 per cent of the population. For the end of year 2016
Telefónica Deutschland plans to reach an outdoor LTE-coverage of up to 90
per cent.
