Versatel and Telefónica agree long-term cooperation for fibre
- Versatel takes over fibre network of Telefónica in Hamburg
- Subject to antitrust clearance the transaction will be closed by the
end of the year
Düsseldorf/Munich, October 21, 2013 - Versatel, one of the leading
telecommunication companies for business and wholesale customers in
Germany, takes over the fibre network of Telefónica in the city of Hamburg.
Besides Berlin, Versatel now owns a very compact fibre network with 93.000
kilometres of fibre and 1.000 kilometres of cable accordingly; also in the
second biggest city of Germany, Hamburg. With this transaction both
companies enforce their existing cooperation for fixed and mobile services.
By signing the contract, Versatel gets one oft he biggest expansions of its
fibre network in the recent history of the company. Besides the network,
Versatel will also buy a new build data processing service centre. This
allows Versatel not only to offer to its business and wholesale customers a
better network coverage but also the possibility for more comprehensive
housing services.
Especially in the north of Germany, Versatel strengthens its position as a
leading infrastructure and telecommunication company for business
customers. Hamburg is deemed one of the important industrial locations in
Germany, not least due to the national harbour that is ranked among the
most important container harbours internationally.
The takeover is a custom-fit for the Versatel business model. Telefónica in
return ensures itself the long-term access to the Versatel fibre network.
As such, the company will sustain to offer attractive products and services
to its business and consumers customers.
'Versatel has on long standing experience in running and rolling out fibre
infrastructure. With the consolidation of the networks, we are ever more
the right partners for the increasing requirements of our customers in
respect of broadband, both in the region of Hamburg and throughout Germany.
After Berlin, Versatel now also has a comparable comprehensive own network
infrastructure in the second biggest German city', says Johannes Pruchnow,
chairman of the Versatel management.
'The enlargement of our existing cooperation allows Telefónica to deploy
UMTS and LTE mobile sites in the total fibre network of Versatel and to
provide excellent data usage experience to its business and retail
customers', says René Schuster, CEO of Telefónica Deutschland.
Last year already, Versatel has strengthened its footprint by taking over
KielNET. Versatel is represented in the 33 biggest German cities with own
infrastructure.
The sale is subject to regulatory approval and the transaction should be
closed by the end of 2013.
