Unlimited meets individualization:O2 rethinks mobile communications
At the start of the new decade, O2 is defining mobile telephony completely differently and is offering maximum personal freedom in an increasingly digital world: As the first network operator on the German market, O2 is placing three unlimited tariffs at the centre of its offer from 4 February. They differ in terms of their respective maximum surfing speed – and offer the right speed for every need.1
At the same time, O2 is upgrading its tariffs with included high-speed data volume and delivers twice as many gigabytes for the same price.2 With all higher-value tariffs, customers will be able to surf the 5G network in future at no extra charge.4
- Endless surfing from 29.99 euros per month: O2 Free Unlimited Basic, Smart and Max offer the right surfing speed for every type of user.1
- Upgrading the classic volume tariffs: O2 Free (Boost) S, M, L with double data performance at the same price.2
- Maximum flexibility: All O2 Free tariffs are also available in the Flex version without minimum contract period.3
- 5G-ready: The use of the new mobile phone standard is included in all new O2 Free tariffs from 39.99 euros at no additional cost.4
- Unlimited or GB – customers have the choice: With the help of the O2 You configurator, they can put together their individual contract components themselves.
"Mobile data consumption has increased rapidly in recent years. With the high-volume O2 Free tariffs, we are clearly a driver of this development: our customers now use more than twice as much data as the average German. The introduction of 5G will cause data consumption to grow significantly again", explains Wolfgang Metze, member of the Management Board of Telefónica Germany responsible for private customers. "At the start of the 2020s, we are therefore rethinking mobile communications – and breaking with existing rules on the market: We are combining endless volume with different surfing speeds, and all this at a highly attractive price-performance ratio. The decisive factor is therefore no longer how much data our customers consume. The only thing that matters is how they use their smartphone every day. Our customers choose the solution that best suits their personal needs. With this new approach, we are demonstrating the consistent customer orientation of our core brand O2 and are once again assuming a pioneering role in the market.”
Beginners, normal users, power users: The right speed for everyone
At O2 there is the right surfing speed for every type of user. Customers who check emails on their smartphone or research the World Wide Web, scan social media platforms, share photos, stream music or videos, choose O2 Free Unlimited Basic. For EUR 29.99 per month, the entry-level tariff offers a data flat rate with a surfing speed of up to 2 Mbit/s.5 If customers also use their smartphone or tablet to stream live TV content or video content in HD quality, they are well advised to choose O2 Free Unlimited Smart.6 For EUR 39.99 per month, they can surf at up to 10 Mbit/s – a speed at which almost all applications can be used conveniently on the move. If you want even more performance, for example regularly open hotspots for several end devices, if you depend on super-fast uploads and downloads on the move or have a preference for multiplayer gaming, then go for O2 Free Unlimited Max. For 49.99 euros, customers can surf at a top surfing speed of up to 225 MBit/s.7
Unlimited at O2: flexible on request, at home and abroad, with attractive services
All O2 Free Unlimited tariffs are also available in the Flex version: For a surcharge of 5 euros per month, they can be cancelled at any time with 30 days' notice to the end of the billing period.3 With O2 Free Unlimited, customers surf the Internet not only in Germany but also in other EU countries.1
At O2, Unlimited basically means that customers can use all mobile services and applications. Streaming services available from O2 such as O2 TV powered by waipu.tv can be perfectly combined with the three O2 Unlimited tariffs.
O2 Free GB tariffs: Twice the performance for the same price.
For all customers who would rather use a classic tariff with included high-speed data volume, the tariffs O2 Free S, M, L are still available.2 With a decisive innovation: From 4 February, O2 will offer twice as many high-speed data for the same price. The O2 Free M tariff will include 20 GB per month instead of the previous 10 GB. The current price point of 29.99 euros remains unchanged. The principle "more for the same money" also applies to the O2 Free Boost tariffs. For a surcharge of 5 euros per month, customers receive twice the data volume.8 In O2 Free Boost L, this means a full 120 GB instead of 60. Thanks to the O2 Connect option, O2 Free Boost customers can operate up to ten mobile devices – from smartphone to tablet and from Smartwatch to GPS tracker.9
No off-the-peg product: Create your own contract with O2 You Configurator
The new mobile portfolio marks the start of the next dimension of individualization. Instead of off-the-shelf products, O2 offers individual solutions for very personal needs. O2 customers literally have their contract conditions in their own hands: they decide: With or without a smartphone? Low or high down payment? Short mobile phone instalment plan with a term of only six months or a longer instalment period of up to 36 months? Gigabytes or Unlimited? Surfing speed for normal users or maximum speed? 24 months commitment or mobile phone contract without minimum term?3
Ready for the next era: Use 5G at no extra cost
The basis for the new O2 Free tariffs is a strong network, which recently received the grade "good" for the first time in three independent tests.10 O2 wants to continue to meet the rapidly increasing data consumption in the future. The company is therefore investing several billion in its network from 2020, compressing 4G and building up 5G from the first quarter. The new mobile communications standard will initially be available in the five largest German cities Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Cologne and Frankfurt. By the end of 2022, a total of 16 million inhabitants in 30 cities will benefit from higher surfing speeds, more capacity and intelligent networking of digital devices. Customers who book a new O2 Free tariff starting at 39.99 euros per month are already prepared for the digital future: O2 Free Unlimited Smart and Max as well as O2 Free L and Boost L are 5G-ready. The use of the 5G network is included in the future without additional costs.4
For new and existing customers: Soon bookable in all O2 channels
The new O2 Free Portfolio can be booked online from 4 February 2020 at o2.de, in all O2 shops and partner shops and via the O2 hotline for new and existing customers. Existing mobile customers can switch to the new tariffs when they extend their contracts. Customers with an ongoing O2 mobile phone or DSL contract benefit from the O2 combination advantage: When concluding an additional contract, they receive a 50 percent discount on their monthly invoice amount.11 The O2 Free Unlimited Basic tariff is thus already available for existing customers for € 14.99 per month. O2 also grants a discount to customers under 28 years of age: With every O2 Free tariff – whether Unlimited or with included high-speed data volume – they save EUR 10 per month. This means that young people can already surf the Internet from 19.99 euros per month without any volume restrictions.12
