Market launch for private customers:O2 opens 5G for the mass market

Starting today, private O2 customers can experience 5G: The use of the new mobile phone standard is a fixed component of all O2 Free tariffs starting at 39.99 euros per month. New customers can book it via all O2 sales channels. Existing customers with a "5G ready" tariff activate 5G usage with just a few clicks. O2 also offers a range of attractive 5G smartphones in all price categories - with and without mobile phone tariffs. They can be paid off flexibly via the O2 My Handy instalment model. If desired, customers can protect their new end device with the new O2 cell phone insurance. "We are launching 5G at exactly the right time. And in exactly the same way as O2 customers are used to from us", explains Wolfgang Metze, private customer board member of Telefónica Germany / O2. "For our O2 customers, we are creating the most attractive overall 5G package on the market - with innovative tariffs and modern hardware at an outstanding price-performance ratio, excellent sales and service, a strong brand and a high-performance network".

O2 Free tariffs: 5G for new and existing customers

O2's 5G tariffs can be booked from today online at o2.de, in the O2 Shops and via the O2 Hotline. The use of the 5G network is included in all O2 Free tariffs from 39.99 euros per month at no extra charge.1 The special: Already the most favorable tariff O2 Free L offers with 60 GB high-speed data volume up to two and a half times more data than comparable offers in the German market.2/3 Further O2 5G tariffs are O2 Free L Boost4/2 as well as the two tariffs with an unlimited data volume O2 Free Unlimited Smart5 and Unlimited Max.6/2 All 5G tariffs are alternatively available with a running time contract over 24 months or a Flex contract with monthly period of notice. O2 existing customers who have opted for a "5G ready" tariff since 4 February 2020 also surf the new 5G network of O2 without any surcharge. They will receive access via a free 5G option. It can be activated with just a few clicks in the self-care area "My O2". Customers receive information about this via SMS and e-mail. Existing customers without a "5G ready" tariff can switch to a 5G tariff when renewing their contract.

5G smartphones: Flexible payment via O2 My Handy

O2 offers a wide range of 5G smartphones in all price categories. To start with, more than ten models from the manufacturers Samsung, Huawei, Xiaomi, Google and Oppo are part of the range. In addition, further attractive 5G-capable devices are expected on the market in the near future. Via O2 My Handy, customers can purchase their 5G smartphone with or without a mobile phone contract. If they only need a new device, customers can choose between a convenient one-off payment or flexible installment payments over 6, 12, 24, 36 or 48 months. The device price always remains the same, the monthly rate varies: The longer the period, the lower it is. In this way, even high-end devices become affordable. As soon as the smartphone is paid off, no further costs arise. The O2 My Handy contract ends automatically and does not need to be cancelled. Customers who would like to combine their 5G smartphone with a 5G tariff can look forward to attractive combination offers when the market launch takes place: The Samsung Galaxy S20 5G, for example, is available with the O2 Free Unlimited Max for 67.99 euros per month with a 24-month contract term and a one-off payment of 1 euro.7 The Xiaomi Mi10 5G 128 GB is available with the O2 Free L for EUR 39.99 per month with a 24-month contract term and a one-off payment of EUR 49.8 When the device is paid off, O2 customers will not incur any further smartphone costs - even if the mobile phone contract continues after the two-year minimum term. All that remains to be paid is the monthly basic tariff fee.

O2 cell phone insurance: all-round protection for your new device

The O2 cell phone insurance covers breakage, fall and liquid damage
Who would like to secure its 5G Smartphone, the new O2 Handy insurance in addition books.9 Starting from 4.95 euro in the month it offers an all around insurance protection, which applies world-wide.10 Break, fall and liquid damage are covered. In addition, the device is insured against burglary, simple theft and robbery. Also included is the assumption of unlawfully incurred telephone costs of up to 2,000 Euro. In addition, the insurance covers warranty claims from the 13th to the 24th month.11 Customers can take advantage of a 24-hour exchange service12 as well as an optional repair service13 - if technically possible and requested by the customer. In doing so, O2 works together with repair partners who are certified by the smartphone manufacturers and only use original spare parts. Damage can be reported by phone or online. In addition to cell phones and smartphones, O2 cell phone insurance can also be taken out for tablets and watches. Customers can insure their new devices directly upon purchase or within the first 30 days after purchase via O2 Handy-Versicherung .

O2 5G network: launch in 15 major German cities

In addition, the network will now be activated immediately in ten further cities - including, for example, Düsseldorf, Stuttgart, Essen and Potsdam. By the end of 2021, the company will have set up more than 2,000 5G sites in cities and thus around 6,000 5G antennas on the high-performance 3.6 GHz frequencies. In order to develop rural areas, the company will also soon introduce Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS) technology. Frequencies that are currently still used for 3G will be successively reallocated to the 5G network. Telefónica Deutschland / O2 will thus provide more than 30 percent of the German population with 5G by the end of next year and by the end of 2022 already about half of the German population. By 2025 at the latest, the whole of Germany will be supplied with 5G. Where O2 customers can use the 5G network, they will be able to see a network map on the O2 customer portal.
